Rally for the Ages: A Tudor Experience in the Cotswolds

It’s not even midday and I am sweating. Part of it is the epic heatwave hitting Britain and the rest of Europe. Part of it is nerves.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“15 Seconds” reminds the timekeeper. I’ve long shaken off the drowsiness from a poor night’s sleep. The cheers from Cole and the rest of the crows representing Tudor fade as concentration takes over. I glance back down at the route book in my lap. Test one is a simple task- only a dozen or so cones and a few slaloms to navigate in the span of a single minute. Simple. I am already feeling the pressure. Shortly, it’s going to get a lot more complicated.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“10 Seconds”. Jacob, the driver, looks over at me and clutches in and slots the car into first gear. No words are needed in these precious few seconds. We know what we need to do.</span></p> <p><a href="https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-3.jpg"><img width="1999" height="1333" loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-162597 size-full" src="https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-3.jpg" alt="" srcset="https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-3.jpg 1999w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-3-300x200.jpg 300w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-3-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-3-768x512.jpg 768w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-3-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-3-1498x999.jpg 1498w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-3-1000x667.jpg 1000w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-3-600x400.jpg 600w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-3-1260x840.jpg 1260w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-3-700x467.jpg 700w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-3-335x223.jpg 335w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-3-440x293.jpg 440w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1999px) 100vw, 1999px" /></a></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I’ve already synchronized the Tudor Ranger 39mm on my left wrist to the exact time of day- in case I forget to reset the stopwatch. A highlighter in my left hand, a pen in my right. Left page- my landmarks, intersections, and signposts. Right page-my time and distance benchmarks. </span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“Five. Four. Three. Two. One. GO!” Jacob gives it gas and clutches out. As the MG leaps forward, my nerves vanish and what little instinct I’ve picked up in the last 15 hours have kicked in.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The scream of the MG’s engine tells me it’s about to kiss redline. Jacob executes a flawless shift to second as the first feature of the test comes flying up. </span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“Left inside!” I exclaim as Jacob begins to stab the brakes and turn in.  </span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“Right, then straight, then hard left, inside again!” We leave tarmac and enter the gravel section. Dust billows out from beneath the wheels from a sunbaked drought-stricken portion of the airfield. The cone is a mere five feet from the left-portion of the MG’s nose. The front wheels begin their suggestion to turn as the gravel is pushed out from under them. Jacob gives it more throttle and the rear wheels take over the steering duties obediently rotating the car around the cone. </span></p> <p><a href="https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-2-4.jpg"><img width="1999" height="1333" loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-162611 size-full" src="https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-2-4.jpg" alt="" srcset="https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-2-4.jpg 1999w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-2-4-300x200.jpg 300w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-2-4-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-2-4-768x512.jpg 768w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-2-4-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-2-4-1498x999.jpg 1498w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-2-4-1000x667.jpg 1000w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-2-4-600x400.jpg 600w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-2-4-1260x840.jpg 1260w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-2-4-700x467.jpg 700w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-2-4-335x223.jpg 335w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-2-4-440x293.jpg 440w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1999px) 100vw, 1999px" /></a></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“Straight, straight, straight. Left-outside!” I yell. The car dives in as the cone whizzes past Jacob’s door. So it goes for what seems like minutes but is only another 30 seconds. We reach the end of the first test. I present the timecard to the exiting timekeeper who records our pace. While he scribes the time and scans our chip out of the test area, I turn the page in the route-book to navigate us to our next event: a timed regulation that utilizes navigated distance over a set time point to determine score. Too fast and you are penalized. Too slow and you’re penalized. Wrong turn? Let’s hope we do not need to figure that out. I zero out the total and section odometers, and reset my stopwatch. </span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“Left turn out, in .18 miles junction, give-way right. I step off the British Airways red-eye into an already warm Heathrow and make my way to baggage, rubbing whatever low-quality sleep I got from my eyes. I searched back and forth for my name in the crowd of travelers. The sign appears, my name below the Red Shield and the Tudor moniker. As I wave, Dan from HERO-ERA and Itineris gives me a warm smile. As we chat nonchalantly and make our way to the motor park he asks me a question that catches me off-guard. </span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“Would you like the top up or down?” </span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Just then, the form of a 1977 Bentley Corniche convertible appears beyond a generic suv.  </span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Moments later we merge on the M5, sun on my face and wind in my hair, as if you had any doubts about what my response would have been.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">We’re on our way to Bicester, an hour’s drive northwest into the English countryside. At a quaint little English Manor turned hotel, we are greeted by Cole Pennington of Tudor and Patrick Burke, owner of HERO-ERA. Six of us from different parts of the world, and from different backgrounds, have united to learn the art of timed rallies. Before we continue our journey, let’s make some introductions and give some background information.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">HERO-ERA is one of the most prominent multi-service historic motoring platforms in the world that specializes in historic motor rallies. A passion project headed by Patrick, HERO-ERA combines world-class service, hosting historic motor rallies as short as our Hero for the Ages rally, or a 43 day 17,500 km rally from Peking to Paris. Patrick’s team is the best in the business. From travel logistics to route planning, from food to accommodations (i.e. glamping in the middle of the Gobi), Patrick and HERO-ERA create a truly unique experience that has cultivated a loyal clientele that participates from all corners of the world. HERO-ERA’s rallies, such as Peking to Paris, have such popularity that many are sold out through 2028. Patrick’s visionary approach to historic rally is all-encompassing. So much that his commitment to the future of this sport and sustainability are unprecedented. The entire support HERO-ERA offers is emissions offset. Patrick is even more dedicated to the future drivers of these historic rallies, and HERO-ERA not only welcomes but strongly encourages youth and beginners to partake. Special awards are given to the youngest teams, father-daughter teams, and volunteers that are just entering adolescence. It truly is “A Rally for the Ages”. </span></p> <p><a href="https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-7.jpg"><img width="2000" height="1333" loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-162601 size-full" src="https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-7.jpg" alt="" srcset="https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-7.jpg 2000w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-7-300x200.jpg 300w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-7-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-7-768x512.jpg 768w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-7-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-7-1499x999.jpg 1499w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-7-1000x667.jpg 1000w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-7-600x400.jpg 600w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-7-1260x840.jpg 1260w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-7-700x467.jpg 700w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-7-335x223.jpg 335w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-7-440x293.jpg 440w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 2000px) 100vw, 2000px" /></a></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Tudor is the official timekeeper and sponsor of HERO-ERA’s events, including ours. In many enthusiasts’ watch purchasing journeys, (including my own), Tudor has been regarded as an aspirational obtention paralleling the aspirational feelings towards the activity at hand one experiences during their events. Name your passion; from the seas to the skies and to a B-road tucked somewhere in the Cotswolds, you’re in it for real. You are embodying everything it means to be a part of that experience. Tudor shows you that it is possible to live some of your passions, even if they are an occasional indulgence &#8211; like walking into an authorized dealer and putting a Tudor on your wrist. Now, back to the task at hand.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The term “Rally” likely conjures up a different type of experience depending on what you may or may not know about the sport. This is not your “Group B’ style of flat-out multi-surface racing that requires Walter Rohr levels of heroics and mastery of the “Scandinavian Flick”. Timed Rally is a measure of accuracy, trust, and confidence. Take for example the navigator’s confidence: that he is in the right place at the right time, instructing the right speed, and the driver’s confidence: in his trust that the navigator’s instructions are accurate and that he’s obeying them to their fullest. The gist of it is simple, but the devil is in the details. </span></p> <p><a href="https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-2-1.jpg"><img width="2000" height="1333" loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-162608 size-full" src="https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-2-1.jpg" alt="" srcset="https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-2-1.jpg 2000w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-2-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-2-1-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-2-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-2-1-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-2-1-1499x999.jpg 1499w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-2-1-1000x667.jpg 1000w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-2-1-600x400.jpg 600w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-2-1-1260x840.jpg 1260w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-2-1-700x467.jpg 700w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-2-1-335x223.jpg 335w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-2-1-440x293.jpg 440w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 2000px) 100vw, 2000px" /></a></p> <p><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Flashback:</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> 11, July 08:30 AM. After a proper English breakfast, we all gathered in the courtyard behind our Manor, enjoying the last bit of cooler weather before the sun wilted us like thirsty basil. George from Itineris has presented to each of us a “Tulip Book” – a guidebook nicknamed after the famous “Tulip Rally” held in the mid 1950s. The Tulip book, trip odometers, and stopwatch are the three single most important parts of getting the navigation right. If any one of these is ignored, the job goes from being difficult to damn near impossible. We got a crash course in how to read symbols, work odometers, and use time to help calculate speed. For absolute novices like most of our lot, this proved to be the catalyst that has us drinking from the proverbial firehose. Shrugging the jetlag off and doing our best to commit it to memory, we endeavored off on a practice rally, each taking turns as driver and navigator to learn the lot. Jacob and I, being the two yanks in the group, also got to experience the additional familiarization curve of driving on the opposite side of the road while sitting in the opposite side of the car. Gear changes which were alien at first (all of our vintage machines were standard shift, manual steer, non-air-conditioned cars from the mid 70s) became more familiar as we became more confident in our driving capabilities. It was also a great opportunity to get a feel for which roles fit best for each of us in tomorrow’s competition. </span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The practice rally was great fun. We had two stops and three sections all over the British countryside to feel our way through. Wrong turns were made, shifts were missed, but smiles were universal. Our plucky little team named Shake and Bake (hopefully you get the reference) naturally landed on Jacob taking driving duties and me taking navigation – the fit became second nature as it did for the two other teams. Over a nice dinner and heady pints, we regaled our experiences of the first day. An outsider eaves-dropping would have thought we were old chums one and all. </span></p> <p><a href="https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-10.jpg"><img width="2000" height="1333" loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-162604 size-full" src="https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-10.jpg" alt="" srcset="https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-10.jpg 2000w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-10-300x200.jpg 300w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-10-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-10-768x512.jpg 768w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-10-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-10-1499x999.jpg 1499w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-10-1000x667.jpg 1000w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-10-600x400.jpg 600w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-10-1260x840.jpg 1260w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-10-700x467.jpg 700w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-10-335x223.jpg 335w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-10-440x293.jpg 440w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 2000px) 100vw, 2000px" /></a></p> <p><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Back to Present Saturday, July 11 nearing lunchtime:</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> The MG’s hood is propped open, allowing the marginally cooler air to waft in and over the engine bay. The bleed valve on the engine block is cracked open, steam billowing and water droplets sizzling as they hit the exhaust manifold. The sound is not dissimilar to the morning rush at a Waffle House. Below the MG, water and coolant have pooled. We are back at the airfield, having just completed the second to last test of the day, where Jacob and I switched roles so I could have a go at the wheel. Test three is identical to test one, except for running the course in reverse. I had channeled my inner Senna, sliding the poor MG around the cones while sawing fervently at the wheel. The efforts resulted in a low time, but I overheated the car. </span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">While we waited the 25 or so minutes for the MG to cool down and after the incredible HERO-ERA support put more water in the radiator, our nerves also began to cool and I genuflected on the weekend.</span></p> <p><a href="https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-6.jpg"><img width="2000" height="1333" loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-162600 size-full" src="https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-6.jpg" alt="" srcset="https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-6.jpg 2000w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-6-300x200.jpg 300w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-6-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-6-768x512.jpg 768w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-6-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-6-1499x999.jpg 1499w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-6-1000x667.jpg 1000w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-6-600x400.jpg 600w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-6-1260x840.jpg 1260w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-6-700x467.jpg 700w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-6-335x223.jpg 335w, https://wornandwound.com/library/uploads/2026/07/Tudor-Cotswolds-6-440x293.jpg 440w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 2000px) 100vw, 2000px" /></a></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">From the moment of being whisked off to Bicester to present, I have gotten an experience like no other, to live the life of a resolute historic motor rally enthusiast. It’s an inimitable thing, historic motor rally. It’s about cars, it’s about courses, but most importantly it is about the community of people. HERO-ERA has set up something very special in not only keeping historical motoring and timed rally competition alive, but also welcoming and encouraging the youth to become involved.
